Four Mandarin High School athletes represented the Mustangs on Thursday, Sept. 17, at the annual High School 9:12/Baker's Sports Fall Sports Media Day in Northeast Florida.

Will Kenney (golf), Joseph Herrera (cross country), Kyla Hollis (volleyball) and Teagan Rhodes (swimming) attended the event, which ran from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Florida Times-Union sportswriter Clayton Freeman identified the four Mandarin athletes on X.

Mandarin was one of four school programs at the event, joining Oakleaf, Orange Park and Keystone Heights, according to Freeman.

The Florida Times-Union published a photo gallery from the event featuring volleyball, swimming, cross-country and golf athletes from across the region.

Hollis leads a decorated volleyball program

Among the four Mustangs, Hollis carries the deepest track record. The 6-foot senior outside hitter helped Mandarin win three consecutive Gateway Conference volleyball championships from 2022 through 2024 and back-to-back Class 7A District 1 titles in 2024 and 2025, according to Duval Sports. Head coach Daniel Magnusson guided the 2024 squad to a 19-5 record.

Hollis contributed as a sophomore during that 2024 championship run. She is now listed as a senior on the Mustangs' 2026-27 roster.

Cross country eyes Katie Caples Invitational

Herrera represents a Mandarin boys cross-country team that placed third at the Buchholz Bobcat Classic in Gainesville, finishing behind Bishop Kenny and Buchholz, according to the Florida Times-Union.

The Mustangs' next test is Saturday, Sept. 19. The Katie Caples Invitational, one of Northeast Florida's marquee cross-country meets, draws hundreds of runners from dozens of schools to a 5K course along the St. Johns River.
