Mandarin carries sole possession of first place in District 2-5A into a home game against Lake Mary on Friday, Oct. 2, after rolling Fletcher 31-10 on Sept. 25.
Kickoff is 6:30 p.m.
The Mustangs (4-1) jumped to a 14-0 lead against Fletcher and never looked back in what News4Jax called a "Super 10 showdown" between the area's No. 6- and No. 7-ranked teams. The win answered Mandarin's lone loss of the season, a 31-13 defeat to Raines on Sept. 18 that was the Mustangs' first loss to a Duval County public school since 2021.
Foster and Wright power Mandarin's offense
Running back Shaunqueze Foster has been the engine. The senior has 661 rushing yards and nine touchdowns through five games, averaging 132.2 yards per game, according to MaxPreps.
Junior wide receiver Brysen Wright, ESPN's No. 1 recruit in the class of 2028, has 507 receiving yards at 101.4 per game. Wright had 983 receiving yards and 10 touchdown catches in 2025 and logged 63 tackles and five interceptions on defense, according to a News4Jax preseason profile.
Linebacker Jerel Stephens anchors the defense at 7 tackles per game. Safety Kamauri Townsend has two interceptions on the season.
Quarterback Knox Annis, a Miami commit, directs the offense. Defensive tackle Kindrid Outland, committed to South Florida, recorded 62 tackles and 21 tackles for loss in 2025.
Head coach Toby Bullock has preached preparation all season. "Five hundred thirty-six hours of football in a season. You only get 45 hours of actual playing time," Bullock said in an August feature on News4Jax. "So 88% of the time you are in preparation."
Defending state champion Lake Mary off to rough start
The Rams (1-4) won the big-school state championship in 2025 but have struggled early. Lake Mary fell to Lake Brantley 28-21 on Sept. 25 after the game was tied at 7, 14 and 21, with a touchdown pass in the final minute deciding it, according to the Orlando Sentinel. The Rams lost to West Orange 36-13 a week earlier.
Senior wide receiver Malakii Haliburton is Lake Mary's top target, averaging 89 receiving yards per game, according to MaxPreps.
Mustangs chase a fifth straight district title
Mandarin has won district titles in each of the last four seasons and eight times overall, according to the program's official account on X. A win Friday keeps the Mustangs atop the district standings heading into an Oct. 9 trip to Ponte Vedra at 7 p.m.
