Mandarin locked up its fifth straight district championship after routing Beachside 47-6. The Mustangs climbed to No. 19 in the On3/Massey Ratings Florida Top 25, published Sunday, Oct. 18, at 7-1 with two regular-season games remaining.
Their only loss came Sept. 18 against Raines, 31-13.
The district title became official when Nease beat Bartram Trail 41-27 the same night, according to News4Jax. That combination clinched the crown for head coach Toby Bullock's squad before the final two weeks of the regular season.
"We won four districts in a row," Bullock told News4Jax on Oct. 8, when Mandarin was 5-1 and entering district play. "We want to make it a fifth."
He got it.
The statewide composite ranking, compiled by On3's Andy Villamarzo using the Massey Ratings model, slots Mandarin between No. 18 F.W. Buchholz and No. 20 St. Augustine. Jacksonville's Raines, now 8-0 after a 48-0 win over Riverside, holds the No. 6 spot in the On3 poll. MaxPreps lists Mandarin No. 5 in Class 5A and No. 5 in the Jacksonville media market.
Under the Florida High School Athletic Association's (FHSAA) postseason format, the eight highest-ranked eligible teams in each classification advance to the Open Division. The remaining fields include four district champions and four at-large teams per region, according to Sports Illustrated's Florida coverage.
After Week 8, SI had Mandarin sixth in Class 5A with a 77.48 rating. Updated Week 9 class ratings had not been published as of Monday, Oct. 19.
Senior running back Shaunqueze Foster leads the offense with 143.1 rushing yards per game and 13 total touchdowns through eight games, per MaxPreps. Junior quarterback Knox Annis has thrown for 1,586 yards. Junior wide receiver Brysen Wright averages 91.3 receiving yards per game.
On defense, senior defensive tackle Kindrid Outland has recorded 5.5 sacks. Senior linebacker Jerel Stephens leads the team with 6.7 tackles per game.
Last season, Mandarin's playoff run ended in the third round with a 27-20 loss to Gainesville Buchholz, one win short of the state semifinals, as News4Jax reported in August.
Mandarin hosts Bartram Trail (6-2) on Friday, Oct. 23, at 6:30 p.m., then welcomes St. Augustine on Friday, Oct. 30, at 7 p.m.
