Two Mandarin sites will serve as cleanup stations Saturday, when the International Coastal Cleanup brings volunteers to more than two dozen locations across Duval County.
Mandarin Park and Walter Jones join cleanup
Mandarin Park, at 14780 Mandarin Road, and Walter Jones Historical Park, at 11964 Mandarin Road, are both on the city of Jacksonville's list of cleanup sites. Both run from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Mandarin Park sits along Julington Creek near where it flows into the St. Johns River, according to St. Johns Riverkeeper. Walter Jones Historical Park borders the St. Johns itself.
Keep Jacksonville Beautiful coordinates local effort
The city's Keep Jacksonville Beautiful program is coordinating the local effort, which is part of the Ocean Conservancy's annual International Coastal Cleanup. The city of Jacksonville said on X that volunteers will work at more than two dozen sites around Duval County.
The program is billed as the world's largest volunteer effort to protect oceans, lakes and rivers. Volunteers track every piece of trash they collect. Ocean Conservancy uses that data to produce an annual snapshot of the marine debris problem worldwide.
No registration required to volunteer
No advance registration is required. Site captains will sign in volunteers and hand out bags and gloves at each location. Participants must be 18 or older, or accompanied by an adult. Students can receive service hour certificates.
The Keep Jacksonville Beautiful program aims to eliminate debris that injures wildlife, contaminates waterways and threatens boater safety, according to the city's event page.
Cleanup has drawn millions of volunteers globally
Globally, the International Coastal Cleanup has drawn more than 19 million volunteers who have collected more than 400 million pounds of trash since the program began, according to Ocean Conservancy.
Other Duval County sites and their hours
Beyond Mandarin, other Duval County sites on the Sept. 19 schedule include Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park, Riverside Arts Market, Tillie K. Fowler Regional Park, Fort Family Regional Park, Boone Park South, McCue Park and Boat Ramp, Riverview Community Senior Center and Park, and Sidney J. Gefen Riverwalk Park.
