The Florida Department of Transportation is proposing a new pedestrian crosswalk on Lane Avenue just south of Lucente Drive in Jacksonville, with construction expected to begin in fall 2027.

The project would add a crosswalk and concrete median to improve safety for pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists and other vulnerable road users, according to FDOT's official project page.

FDOT District 2 held two public meetings this week to gather feedback on the proposed improvements.

An in-person meeting took place Tuesday, Oct. 13, at the FDOT Training Building, 2198 Edison Ave. An open house ran from 4:30 to 6 p.m., followed by a formal presentation and public comment period.

A virtual meeting followed Wednesday, Oct. 14, with an online open house from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. and a formal presentation beginning at 5:30 p.m.

The meetings were listed on the agency's virtual meetings page. FDOT District 2 also announced them on X.

Crosswalk and concrete median proposed

The project focuses on Lane Avenue, designated State Road 103, immediately south of Lucente Drive.

FDOT's proposal includes a new pedestrian crossing and a concrete median designed to accommodate the crosswalk.

The improvements are intended to provide a safer crossing point for people walking or bicycling along the corridor.

Because Lane Avenue is a state road, FDOT oversees the proposed improvements.

The agency has published meeting boards, a project handout and an aerial overview on its project website.

Construction planned for fall 2027

FDOT lists the project's estimated cost at $870,100, with construction scheduled to begin in fall 2027 and finish in summer 2028.

A separate Transportation Improvement Program amendment reviewed by the North Florida Transportation Planning Organization identified approximately $1.09 million in programmed funding.

The amendment listed $1,050,514 for construction in fiscal year 2027, along with $29,098 and $8,277 for other project phases.

The North Florida TPO's Citizens Advisory Committee and Technical Advisory Committee reviewed the amendment Wednesday, Oct. 7. The TPO Board considered it Thursday, Oct. 8.

The programmed funding figure differs from the estimated project cost currently listed on FDOT's website. The agency has not explained the difference in the materials reviewed.

FDOT identifies the project as No. 430910-3.
