Some Duval County voters have reported difficulty using touch screens on ExpressVote ballot-marking machines during the first days of early voting, according to Action News Jax.

The station reported Oct. 21 that it found complaints online and that Supervisor of Elections Jerry Holland’s office had received a similar complaint. The report did not identify the polling locations involved or establish that Mandarin voters specifically were affected.

Holland urged voters to report problems immediately. He advised anyone having difficulty selecting a candidate to try the attached stylus, or ask to use a machine with one.

The ExpressVote marks and prints a ballot; it does not tabulate votes, Holland explained. Voters should review the printed selections before submitting the ballot and alert a poll worker if anything is wrong. Holland said voters can obtain another ballot and use another machine if needed.

The elections office’s Oct. 21 nightly update recorded 13,487 in-person early votes that day and 49,228 ballots cast through early voting and vote-by-mail combined, representing 7.51% turnout. Its Oct. 20 update recorded 15,944 in-person early votes on opening day.

Some residents also reported missing sample ballots, according to Action News Jax. The elections office’s official sample-ballot notice said 512,378 were being mailed and 100,436 emailed. Residents can find their sample ballot at duvalelections.gov.
