Mandarin is getting an independent bookstore, café and wine bar when Daisy Chain Book Co. opens in October 2026 at 12644 San Jose Blvd. Daisy Chain will stock new books across genres for all ages, along with apparel and gifts for book lovers.
Founder Suzanne Shelton, a former accountant, leased the 3,200-square-foot retail space to create a neighborhood gathering spot combining new books, coffee, wine and community programming, according to Hoodline. Commercial real estate firm NAI Hallmark represented the landlord in the deal.
Shelton chose the Mandarin location because she identified a lack of suburban gathering spaces and interactive community activities in the neighborhood beyond traditional restaurants, Hoodline reported. She decided to launch the store after her daughter encouraged her and after observing a nationwide resurgence in physical bookstores. Independent bookstores saw 422 new locations open in 2025, a 31% jump over 2024, according to American Booksellers Association data cited by Hoodline.
What's Inside: Books, Coffee and Wine
The business address was confirmed in a WhatNow report citing a city filing.
The café inside will serve coffee from St. Augustine-based Screaming Peacock Coffee. Shelton also plans to offer an international wine selection, though beverage licensing details have not been finalized. Dedicated space has been reserved for community programming, including workshops and bingo nights, and the store will feature a children's reading area.
Community Programming and a Charity Partnership
Shelton plans to create a charity program through the shop to donate books to a local children's hospital.
A specific grand opening date has not been announced. Residents can follow updates on the store's website or Facebook page.
